Simplish version 2.4 is here, hand-in-hand with the new WordPress 3.0.

First and foremost: This release is not compatible with earlier versions of WordPress. Use it only with WP3.0 and up.

Only minor refinements are apparent to the eye: You won’t see the word “Trackback” in the comments area anymore, and the former “Pages” list in the default sidebar is now labeled “Navigation” to accommodate the optional custom menu. Just beneath the surface, the theme now outputs HTML5 where once there was XHTML 1.0.

The current Simplish development sources incorporate a growing list of changes, most of them aimed at compatibility with and exploitation of features in the upcoming WordPress version 3.0. Testers and developers can hg clone the in-progress code, but note that it will run only on the latest WordPress v3.0 betas, or svn tip, and should be used only for testing and development.

Simplish 2.3 continues to be the official release for stable WordPress (v2.9.2).

Freshened off a four-month break, a new Simplish massages the visuals just enough to mark version number 2.3. The latest changes burnish corners into gentle curves, erase extraneous divider lines, and multiply the multilingual mix with a new Belarusian (be_BY) localization.

The various *border-radius CSS techniques for turning corners don’t command the obedience of wayward Internet Explorer. While we tested some special border-radius techniques for IE, corners there remain square. Level 2.1 CSS validators will squawk at bits of the new CSS, while browser-specific mutations of same add typographical insult to standards-abandoning injury. Still, we feel those bevels are pretty sporty.

Another appearance tweak removes the bottom border that formerly underlined h4 headings.

New Belarusian translation

Marcis G was kind enough to provide a new Belarusian localization for Simplish. Since we haven’t yet officially released a version of the theme including it, you can find the .po and .mo files in the Issues list if you need Simplish in Belarusian right away.

Simplish version 2.2.3

The latest minor update to Simplish bumps it to version 2.2.3, and it brings a little change to the handling of Categories in the post meta box, spearheaded by Demetris. The theme now specifically checks for the category name Uncategorized, so if you’ve renamed your cat ID #1, it will be displayed on posts in only that category. Previously such posts would show no categories, as though the post were “Uncategorized”.

This change is tiny, but more details can be found in Issue #19 at the Simplish project site.

Simplish version 2.2.2

Version 2.2.2 replaces calls to a few deprecated WordPress functions with their current cousins. No visible differences are introduced. This update ensures compatibility and maintainability atop the latest (read: recommended) and future versions of WordPress.

Many thanks to Demetris for the bulk of the patches included, and vigorous testing with the WP_DEBUG setting, which now gives Simplish the all-clear.

Simplish version 2.2

Version 2.2 introduces the largest set of changes in several months, including new translations for French and Portuguese, minor styling enhancements, and a CSS rewrite that makes things more efficient without changing Simplish’s good looks.

On a display, there is only a single visible change in this release, but the numerous changes to the theme’s CSS will affect customizers or child-themers and therefore prompt a minor version bump over the venerable 2.1[.x] series. Print styles, on the other hand, have changed both in code and in visual presentation.

In honor of translators’ contributions since version 2.1.17, the Simplish Demo is rotating through the supported localizations.

Highlighted Changes

Add fr_FR localization for French, thanks to ttynixer.
Add pt_PT localization for Portuguese, thanks to ttynixer.
Optimize CSS according to Google Page Speed analysis.
Rewrite CSS for simplicity and efficiency. Reduce over-specification.
Trim dead selectors/rules. Merge some sharable selectors/rules.
Add new archives-list CSS class for common multiple-post listing styles.
Add underline on hover to author name in post byline.
More precisely define font, color, layout rules for printed output.

Simplish version 2.1.12

Simplish 2.1.12 fixes two minor sidebar styling issues, and updates the URL pointing to this site.

Changes

Spacing from sidebar element bottom to next element’s h2 consistent. (Noted especially on Search element.)
Spacing below tag cloud widget, if any, matches normal element spacing.
Footer links and blog info in style.css use new URL (http://simplish.pomfolio.com/).

Simplish goes Google Code

We’ve been moving things around as Labs/Blogs reaches the end of its project. This means major changes for Simplish — we hope in the form of expanded collaboration and easier access. At any rate, the theme is moving, but not going away, and continues to be maintained by Utopian.net Labs.

Simplish is fairly stable these days, but if you had been following the git development branch, the source is now using the Mercurial DVCS and hosted at Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/simplish/. We hope you’ll want to join the project as a contributor, and that you’ll find the code easier to access and issues, if any, easier to report.

The demo blog hopped over to our burgeoning hosted-solution service, and can now be found at http://simplish-demo.pomfolio.com. This blog will likely follow it there in the near future — or else will be entirely replaced by the wiki and other pages/documentation possibilities at Google Code.

Of some note to developers is the fact that during the git -> hg -> code.google.com import-export chain, we left out individual author names on past commits – they have the single author of our hg mirror repo. This leaves out some commit credit, not least for Demetris & Brianna. Individual authors will be there as usual on future commits pushed to the new project home.
