Simplish version 2.2

Posted by – October 18, 2009

Version 2.2 introduces the largest set of changes in several months, including new translations for French and Portuguese, minor styling enhancements, and a CSS rewrite that makes things more efficient without changing Simplish’s good looks.

On a display, there is only a single visible change in this release, but the numerous changes to the theme’s CSS will affect customizers or child-themers and therefore prompt a minor version bump over the venerable 2.1[.x] series. Print styles, on the other hand, have changed both in code and in visual presentation.

In honor of translators’ contributions since version 2.1.17, the Simplish Demo is rotating through the supported localizations.

Highlighted Changes

  • Add fr_FR localization for French, thanks to ttynixer.
  • Add pt_PT localization for Portuguese, thanks to ttynixer.
  • Optimize CSS according to Google Page Speed analysis.
  • Rewrite CSS for simplicity and efficiency. Reduce over-specification.
  • Trim dead selectors/rules. Merge some sharable selectors/rules.
  • Add new archives-list CSS class for common multiple-post listing styles.
  • Add underline on hover to author name in post byline.
  • More precisely define font, color, layout rules for printed output.

For a very detailed record of the changes in this release, see the developer changelog.

Simplish version 2.1.10

Posted by – September 4, 2009

Simplish v2.1.10 makes one change to the styling for pre elements, removing the outline border box.

This release simply serves to get the very-slightly-different code we’ve run since the 2.1.9 release out into daylight.

It has had the benefit of production use and testing up to the latest WordPress svn tip (inclusive of the current release, 2.8.4, of course).

Simplish version 2.1.6

Posted by – February 20, 2009

The 2.1.6 release of Simplish contains two fixes for problems discovered in version 2.1.5:

  • Default sidebar Pages menu now honors admin panel page Order settings
  • Footer text is once again properly aligned on the vertical

Note that any Simplish ≥ 2.1.5 is compatible only with WordPress versions ≥ 2.7.

Simplish version 2.1.5

Posted by – February 5, 2009

Simplish 2.1.5 spruces up support for WordPress version 2.7 features, and is only compatible with WordPress versions ≥ 2.7. The changes are focused on complete support for features, removing compatibility code for older WordPress versions, and fixing a few bugs.

  • Auto-generated post classes (and “sticky” post support): Use post_class() everywhere but the page template
  • Fix a dangling </a> that slipped into the 2.1.4 release (validation)
  • Fix excess vertical spacing in content area ol / ul li elements (thanks Demetris @ op111.net)
  • Eliminate some redundant or over-specified CSS rules for ol / ul li elements
  • Switch to new table styling, derived from Gesso, and eliminate code adopted from Blueprint. Remove Blueprint license file and NOTICE note.
  • Use new wp_logout_url() in sidebar logout link
  • Replace manual includes with new get_search_form()
  • Remove the ocomments.php file, and much compatibility code from functions.php (removes support for wp < 2.7)
  • Replace wp_list_pages() calls with new wp_page_menu() to allow in-function “Home” link

Threaded Comments Live

Posted by – February 1, 2009

With the version bump of the Labs/blogs WordPress-µ software to 2.7, we have threaded comments running live here with Simplish 2.1.4, obviating the (regular WordPress) site that had served that demo.

A version 2.1.5 of Simplish will be along soon that eliminates the WordPress version 2.6 compatibility code, and is compatible only with WordPress ≥2.7.

Simplish version 2.1.4

Posted by – December 12, 2008

Simplish 2.1.4 is an update to support WordPress 2.7, including the new threaded comments feature.

  • Support WordPress 2.7′s threaded comments.1
  • Add compatibility comments template for WordPress ≤ 2.6.5.
  • Link to comments goes to heading of comments list (instead of to first comment in list).
  • Fix silly feed:// typo in (default) sidebar syndication links (thanks eighty4.se).
  • Fix “comments” id and class to not have same name (introduce “commentslist”).
  • Use smaller 32×32 gravatar for comment author.

1 – Threaded comment support has not yet been added to WordPress-mu, the software this blog and the Simplish Demo run atop. Until it is, you can check out Simplish’s rendition of threaded comments at a test site.

Simplish version 2.1.3

Posted by – November 27, 2008

Another little gift for the holiday: Here’s a new production edition of Simplish. This is the one you should be using on your real site, you know, where you don’t run pre-release software like Simplish 2.1.4RC, or WordPress 2.7-beta…

Version 2.1.3 is a tiny update that contains just one change: a contributed header background graphic (thanks to both Anonymous and Demetris) that’s 10x smaller than the original, down from ~2.7 Kilobytes to a super-slender 256 Bytes.

In other words, this update is definitely not a big deal. But it does trim the theme’s only image down to a size smaller than… most of your blog posts, and might help (a very little bit) with bandwidth or page load times if you’re using Simplish on a very-busy site.

About Versions and Fixes

Posted by – November 17, 2008

We have a very-roughly monthly release schedule, and as our infrequently-honored date of the 20th approaches, the fix I have is a good one, but the only one: Anonymous contributed to the sibling sp theme a new background header image in PNG form at just 10% of the original’s size.

If there are other corners we could tidy, let us know with a comment here – that includes providing specific examples for the reported issue with some AJAX sidebar widgets and Simplish v2.1.2, as well as the question about the importance of threaded comment support -vs- the simplicity of loading no JavaScript.
